Welsh Bridge emergency repairs
Shrewsbury's Welsh Bridge will close every night this week for emergency repairs. The sandstone bridge was built in 1795 and is Grade II listed. Shropshire Council says an inspection of Welsh Bridge found "a significant number of balustrades on both parapets" were loose and at risk of falling onto the river or pavement.
"When they were building this in the 18th century, they didn't imagine there would be trucks going across," says Liz Laycock, Professor of Stone Conservation, Natural & Built Environment at Sheffield Hallam University.
