The chief of the Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton, says the threat from Russia is real and growing: "Sons and daughters, colleagues, veterans … will all have a role to play. To build, to serve and, if necessary, to fight. And more families will know what sacrifice for our nation means." There are increasingly serious briefings from many European countries about the threat from Putin. Germany and France have just voted to introduce voluntary military service for 18-year-olds. UK defence and security spending being increased to 5% of GDP in the coming years.
