How Art Deco was embraced on the Underground
London Transport commissioned hundreds of Art Deco style posters in the 20s and 30s.
During the 1920s and 1930s, art deco style could be seen everywhere in the western world, emphasising modernity through simple, clean and streamlined shapes, often using geometric or stylised forms.
At the time The London Underground and London Transport (from 1933), commissioned a large number and variety of posters to promote its network, many of which demonstrated, or were influenced by, Art Deco style. It effectively turned the network into a public art gallery.
Now, an exhibition at the London Transport Museum is showcasing the golden age of poster design in a new exhibition. Ross Ryan and Anna O'Neill have been finding out more.
