"I'd describe it as anxiety" - Joe Marler on why he quit international rugby
Joe Marler says anxiety played a significant part in his shock decision to retire from international rugby last year aged 28.
The prop who's on 59 caps and still plays for his club Harlequins told The Friday Sports Panel "I’d never been overly comfortable playing top top level sport, the pressure of it and how intense it could be and I usually don’t take myself too seriously and you kind of have to do that in international sport."
Speaking to Eleanor Oldroyd Marler also revealed that he sometimes couldn't face leaving home for training camps and that his four-year-old son struggles to understand that his Dad doesn't player for England anymore. He said: "We’re both watching the game and he’s like right Daddy when are you coming on and I’m like,I’m sat next to you, I’ve literally got my arm around you, we’re eating a bowl of chips."
