We failed golden generation - Hargreaves
England's ‘golden generation’ of midfielders were "failed" by not having the team built around them, says former midfielder Owen Hargreaves.
At Euro 2004, when England had arguably the strongest set of midfielders at the tournament, manager Sven-Göran Eriksson opted to play 4-4-2 with Paul Scholes in an unfamiliar left-sided role to accommodate Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard.
Hargreaves, who was part of the squad, said: "They were incredible team players. They would never say, 'I expect to play in this position’. They tried to play together.”
Describing the training sessions, he added: "It was the greatest standard of football I've ever seen. I used to think we were going to win every game 10-0.”
England were beaten by Portgual on penalties in the quarter-finals.
