Pioneering proton beam therapy for 10 year-old girl
10-year-old Amelia Brome was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma - a soft tissue tumour is growing near her brain.
"People don't treat me like I'm normal. The only thing different is my head and that I've got a lump in my head," said Amelia
Amelia was diagnosed with the cancer in January 2017 and received chemotherapy at Manchester Children’s Hospital in UK before NHS funding allowed her to travel to America with her parents.
Talking about chemotherapy Amelia said: “It makes me feel sicky and makes me feel like my throat is burning.”
According to Macmillian Cancer Support, less than 60 children a year are diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma in the UK.
Amelia's final proton beam treatment in Florida, United States is due to finish in July 2017.
The government is spending £250m on two new high energy proton centres in the UK, which will allow patients such as Amelia to receive treatment without having to travel abroad.
