Shearer: Newcastle can’t be loyal to players who got them promoted
Alan Shearer urges Mike Ashley to spend big upon promotion back to the Premier League.
Newcastle's all-time leading goal scorer Alan Shearer says the club “can’t stand still for anyone” following their promotion back to the Premier League.
Rafa Benitez’s side secured an immediate return to the top flight courtesy of a 4-1 win over Preston at St James’ Park.
“I’m sure he’ll demand that the team has to be improved and demand a few quid to do that. That’s what we’re all hoping now because that’s what you have to do. You can’t be loyal and give all the players a chance that have got the team promoted,” said Shearer.
Benitez was backed in the transfer market by owner Mike Ashley to the tune of £50m, but recouped over £80m from the sales of Moussa Sissoko, Georginio Wijnaldum and Andros Townsend.
“I’m sure Rafa will go in and ask for funds to massively improve the team. I think people will realise that the team will need improving to get to the place where they eventually want to get which has to be the top half of the Premier League,” Shearer concluded.
