‘Inappropriate’ restraint used on hundreds of school children

5 live Investigates has discovered that hundreds of children in special schools have been injured whilst being physically restrained by school staff, and that thousands of restraints are carried out on pupils every year.

Former police officer, Joanne Caffrey now trains teachers in the appropriate use of restraint. She has worked in over 200 schools and says there are dangers within the restraint itself where bones could break, and the spine could be damaged.

There are also severe risks after the restraint has happened, mostly exhaustion which reduces the oxygen to the brain and could lead to the rapid decline of brain and organ function.

Presenter Adrian Goldberg went to a restraint training class led by Joanne to learn about the risks.
