The Paris agreement on climate change has come into force, obliging governments to keep the global temperature rise to two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The United Nations climate chief, Patricia Espinosa, described it as a turning point in the fight against global warming.
The High Court in the UK has ruled that Parliament must have a say on triggering Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, which gets formal talks on Brexit under way. The government has instantly launched an appeal against the decision.
