Southgate: Lingard was 'arguably our best player'

England interim manager Gareth Southgate says that Jesse Lingard was 'arguably our best player' after they beat Malta 2-0.

The Manchester United forward was making his international debut for England and played the entire match.

Southgate said: " I think Jesse Lingard was arguably our best player.

"I think the only thing that was possibly missing from his game was a goal today but I thought he had an outstanding game."

The England interim boss also confirmed that Ryan Bertrand wouldn't be available for England's next match, having picked up an injury during the game.

England travel to Slovenia on Tuesday (kick-off 19:45 BST)
