Ethiopia fire kills 23 at prison 'holding Oromo protesters'

The Hellenic Rescue Team is a sea volunteer rescue group credited with saving thousands of lives during 2015. Over the course of the year, the volunteers undertook 1,035 rescue operations, saving 2,500 lives, and assisting more than 7,000 people to safety. In recognition for their work they are being given an award by the UN Refugee Agency. Konstantinos Mitragas, the team leader, has been speaking to Newsday.

The government of Ethiopia says twenty-three people died when a fire broke out in a jail where political prisoners were being held. It said two people were killed as they tried to escape Qilinto prison, while the others died during a stampede. Local media reported gunfire at the prison on Saturday.
