Mother: Spit hood on my disabled daughter was ‘barbaric’

A mother whose disabled daughter was handcuffed and restrained with a spit hood in custody says her treatment was "barbaric".

The 11-year-old girl, who has a neurological disability, was arrested by Sussex Police for minor offences and held for 60 hours without an appropriate adult.

Her mother, whose words were revoiced by an actor, told BBC Radio 5 live the incident was "horrific" and "the most disgusting thing" she had ever seen.

Deputy Chief Constable Robin Smith of Sussex Police said: "The application of any type of restraint is considered only when the level of resistance causes concern for the safety of the detained person, the officer and other members of the public."
