
Growing International Concern over Humanitarian Situation in Syria
France, UK and US call for air drops; People traffickers in Bulgaria; Buhari in Ogoniland.
The United States, France and Britain have called on the UN to begin air drops of humanitarian aid to besieged areas in Syria. They said the government of President Assad had failed to respect the deadline of 1 June for the widespread distribution of urgent supplies.
It seems organised crime syndicates are getting round some of the obstacles established by agreements between Turkey and the European Union. As Nick Thorpe has been finding out in Bulgaria, the people traffickers have found other routes overland which are reaping profits.
Ogoniland is part of the Niger Delta and one of the most impoverished and polluted areas in Nigeria. In a widely-discussed move, President Mohammadu Buhari is due to travel to Bodo, the region's main town, and formally launch a long-awaited clean-up programme.
