A Humanitarian 'Breakthrough' in the Syrian Conflict

Efforts to free besieged townspeople in Syria; The escaped slave who led more than 300 others to freedom on the Underground Railroad is being honoured; Queen Elizabeth is 90 today

The man coordinating international humanitarian efforts in Syria has hailed an operation to evacuate hundreds of people from four besieged Syrian towns.

An escaped slave who freed hundreds of people from bondage is to be the face of the new $20 bill in the United States: Harriet Tubman will be the first African-American to be depicted on US currency, and the first woman to appear on a paper bill in more than a century. She'll replace the seventh US president, Andrew Jackson, who was a slave owner.

Events are being held across Britain and elsewhere today to mark Queen Elizabeth's 90th birthday.
