The Independent's first Defence Correspondent on the paper’s early days

Before becoming diplomatic editor for BBC Newsnight, Mark Urban was defence correspondent at The Independent. Mark’s story headlined the first ever edition on the 7th of October 1986.

Speaking to Eddie Mair on PM Mr Urban said he was attracted to the paper’s mission to create a newspaper that was not politically aligned whose mission was excellence.
