Kompany: Molenbeek is misunderstood
Footballer Vincent Kompany says the Brussels neighbourhood of Molenbeek is misunderstood.
The Manchester City and Belgium Captain grew up in a similar Brussels neighbourhood to Molenbeek, an area which has been subject to intense media attention when seven people from the area were arrested in connection with the Paris attacks.
“It’s not this place that the media makes it out to be. There’s a lot of talent and good things happening coming from Molenbeek, but unfortunately it’s had to deal with a long time of being ignored. It was very easy to ‘fall off the grid’,” he told the Today programme.
“I don’t think people understand enough about each other’s cultures any more. We don’t see any more what the next person is doing.”
