Siege of Syrian Soldiers Broken; Doping in Russian Athletics; EU-Africa Summit

For two years, a small group of Syrian soldiers held out against Islamic State militants - their Kuwairis airbase, to the east of Aleppo, surrounded on all sides. The siege has been ended due to a combination of Syrian government forces, Russian airstrikes and Iranian military advisers. Newsday spoke to Judith Kipper of the Institute of World Affairs for analysis.

The German TV documentary 'Doping: How Russia Creates Its Winners' prompted the World Anti-Doping Agency to investigate further. Newsday speaks to the documentary's producer, Hajo Seppelt.

More than sixty leaders from across the EU and Africa are gathering today in Malta for the Valetta Summit on Migration. Among the options being considered is a plan to pay African nations to take back those migrants who fail to meet the criteria to enter the EU legally. The BBC's Mamadou Moussa Bah reports.
