China ‘more authoritarian’ than in 1989
China is more authoritarian now that at the time of the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989, according to one of the student leaders at the time.
Wuer Kaixi told the Today programme that China had become a “harsher oppressor” in the years following the protest.
“Economic growth did not bring democracy to China,” he told presenter Mishal Husain.
China's President Xi Jinping is in the UK on a state visit and officials from both countries have spoken of the development of a golden relationship between the two.
