Indonesia is considering a national emergency over fires that have been smouldering across the country for weeks. Fires are frequently lit to clear the land, but the haze this year is worse due to a prolonged dry season and the impact of El NiƱo weather system. Environmentalist Dr. Eric Meijaard in Jakarta explains more.
In the aftermath of one of the most closely contested elections in Tanzania tensions are running high. The opposition candidate Seif Sharif Hamad has declared himself the winner, but the country's electoral commission has called for calm and said that only it can declare results as ballots are still being counted.
