Peter Reid's Howard Kendall tribute: 'a great man'
Peter Reid pays tribute to former Everton boss Howard Kendall, who has died aged 69. Kendall was the most successful manager in Everton's history.
Peter Reid says former Everton player and manager Howard Kendall, who has died aged 69, was a "great man", who will be missed immensely.
In the first of three spells as Everton manager, Kendall led Merseysiders to two league titles in 1985 and 1987, won the FA Cup in 1984 and the European Cup Winners Cup in 1985.
In the 1960s and 1970s he played over 200 times for the club, winning the league title and FA Cup, forming one third of a midfield partnership which included Alan Ball and Colin Harvey.
Reid, who was named PFA Players' Player of the Year in Everton's title-winning 1984-85 season, said Kendall was "a great man manager" who was ahead of his time.
"He got together a well-balanced side which could mix it, in terms of the physical aspect, but could play as well," said Reid.
"I'm devastated. He was a friend as well as my boss, and I'll just miss him immensely."
Kendall's playing career started at Preston North End, where he was an FA Cup runner-up in 1964, and also took spells at Birmingham City, Stoke City and Blackburn Rovers. His first managerial role was at Ewood Park, before moving to Everton in 1981. In 1987 he left for two years in Spain at Athletic Bilbao, before taking over at Manchester City.
The latter part of his managerial career saw him return to Goodison Park in 1991, but he resigned after an unsuccessful three years. Atter a short spell at Notts County in 1995 he took over at Sheffield United. A third Everton spell beckoned in 1997, but he left the club at the end of the season after securing Premier League survival on the final day.
