Germany Closes its Borders Temporarily

Germany starts border controls; WW2 twins reunited; Tracking down elusive animals.

Germany has tightened its border controls, following record numbers of migrants over the weekend. As the EU faces the biggest irregular influx of people for almost half a century, it is just another sign that the ideal of a border-free Europe as enshrined in the Schengen treaty is under huge strains. Newsday speaks to Mark Leonard, Director of European Council on Foreign Relations.

George Skrzynecky and Lucian Poznanski were born in Germany after their mother Elizabeth was sent from Poland to a forced labour camp during World War Two. When she became ill, the twins were taken to back to Poland and adopted by separate families. Lucian grew up in Poland, but as a teenager George moved to the US. After a successful search last year they finally met two weeks ago in Poland.

When scientists try to track down elusive and endangered animals, they usually have to make difficult trips into the jungle or set up elaborate camera systems. Now scientists have found a cheap and effective way to save all that work, just by making use of blood sucking leeches.
