Russia's President Vladimir Putin being filmed in a submarine this week furthered his image as "the hard man of Russia”, said a former Downing Street official.

“That was the same with Thatcher [pictured in a tank]”, added Sean Kemp, former deputy head of press at Downing Street for the Lib Dems.

Other memorable leadership vehicular appearances include French President Francois Hollande's motorbike rides and Gordon Brown "clearly hating" being given a ride in US President George Bush's golf cart, added Mr Kemp.
