Lauda: 'People looked shocked' by my crash injuries

Niki Lauda, who was left disfigured after crashing his Ferrari at the Nurbrgring Grand Prix 39 years ago, said people looked "shocked" when talking to him after the crash.

He was flown to the University Hospital in Mannheim where his condition was described as critical, but was back behind the wheel six weeks later, desperate to win the World Championship ahead of fierce rival James Hunt.

Lauda said his right ear was "half burned and not there anymore" which meant "people never looked" at his eyes.

He made a decision to "ignore" this type of response, as he "couldn't change" the injuries he suffered from the crash.
