‘Dead’ jockey returns to the saddle

A jockey who was told he died for six seconds in a life-threatening fall is returning to professional horse racing. Brian Toomey suffered severe head injuries in 2013 when his horse fell at Perth racecourse.

He had been given just a 3% chance of survival and spent 157 nights in hospital, but almost two years after the accident, he has been relicensed.

“One of my best friends came down to where I got the fall […] a paramedic told him that I had passed away” said the 26-year-old, speaking to Kelly Cates.

“If you have a goal when you go through something like this, it’s a massive help to you.”
