McCoy: 'I thought I was going to live the dream' and win Grand National
AP McCoy says he thought he was going to win his final Grand National, after finishing fifth on Shutthefrontdoor at Aintree.
Retiring champion jockey AP McCoy says he thought he was going to win his final Grand National, after finishing fifth on Shutthefrontdoor.
He was in contention to win for much of the race, before eventually fading in the final stages at Aintree behind eventual winner Many Clouds.
McCoy has also confirmed that he'll end his career on the final day of the season at Sandown.
"I thought I was on a horse that was going to live the dream [...] He just ran out of a little bit of stamina [...] I did think until four out that the dream was on," he told BBC 5Live.
He confirmed that he will ride at Sandwon, "I'm going to ride at Sandown on the final day of the season, that's when I'll be lucky enough to be champion jockey for the 20th time."
"In some ways I'm looking forward to it and in a lot of ways I'm not. I'm going to miss riding as I absolutely love riding. I feel like for whatever reason I'm punishing myself by retiring but I know it's the right thing, I know it has to be done. I feel like I'm retiring at the top and that makes it more difficult," He said.
