Poverty and hope in Britain

In this edition, writer Bernard Hare tells a story of poverty and hope from Northern England. Presented by Pascale Harter.

In today’s programme, writer Bernard Hare reflects on his life growing up in poverty in Britain. The son of a coal miner born in the 1950s in the northern England city of Leeds, his life followed a different path, from university to social work to social drop-out in his 30s. When he returned to his hometown and took a group of neglected children under his wing, he found a new purpose in life, and started to collect stories. Poverty isn’t just about lack of money, he says, and a different perspective can change everything.
