Exploring the musical features of a spiritual

Songs of Praise singer and presenter Mica Paris explores the spiritual aided by African-American choral expert Ken Burton. The musical features of spirituals are demonstrated by Burton as he composes a piece at the piano combining biblical words, a pentatonic scale melody and syncopated rhythms. Burton performs the words to a first single line melodic musical idea as 'the call' and then an answering harmonised set of words as the 'response'. The two presenters perform the call and response together in a sung performance with piano accompaniment.
