Spawning surgeons
Surgeonfish don't form long partner bonds to produce the next generation. Instead they cluster in one place on the reef for a mass spawning in the warmer summer months. The females race to the surface to release their eggs, pursued by several competing males who try to fertilise them with a puff of white sperm.
