Donald Macleod explores the relationship between Chausson's early experiences and his music. Ernest Chausson was a serious, thoughtful and somewhat melancholic man. The only surviving son of a prosperous building contractor, he was educated at home, away from the company of other children, in an adult and highly cultured environment. Chausson later acknowledged this as having had a lasting effect on him.
