'Why would I let my son suffer?'
The mother of a baby at the centre of a high court battle has spoken about her fight to let him die. Baby RB was born with a rare genetic condition. The hospital trust and his mother wanted to turn his life support off. His father didn't.
A court order has been in place since 2009 preventing any media organisation from identifying Ronnie, his mother, father or the hospital trust involved. But, with the backing of Ronnie's mother, we've lifted part of that order
The mother of Baby RB, a child at the centre of a legal dispute over whether his life support machine should be switched off , has told us of the moment she held her son in her arms and said goodbye. Baby RB had a rare genetic condition called Congenital myasthenic syndrome or CMS which made it impossible for him to breathe independently and to move his muscles. Doctors believed he had little chance of survival. The hospital trust and his mother wanted to turn his life support off. His father didn't.
For the first time this programme can now name Baby RB as Ronnie and his mother as Kelly Bickell. A court order has been in place since 2009 preventing any media organisation from identifying Ronnie, his mother, father or the hospital trust involved. But, with the backing of Ronnie's mother, we've lifted part of that order - because she wants to tell her story. The hospital trust and Ronnie's father still can't be named so we're calling him Nick. Here Kelly Bickell speaks openly about her son for the first time, and explains why it was so important for her to be able to talk about Ronnie publicly.
