Ivan Hewett explores Béla Bartók's Miraculous Mandarin Op. 19. Bartok began work on this 'grotesque pantomime', a sordid tale of violence, lust and prostitution, in 1918. It was first performed in 1926 and was the composer's final work for the stage. The specially recorded examples are performed by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales conducted by Peter Stark.
