Spanish Civil War
Sam Lesser, 92, was one of the last British survivors from the International Brigades. While still a student, he left the East End of London to fight the fascist forces during the Spanish Civil War.
Thousands of volunteers from around the world joined the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War. Among them was Sam Lesser, then just 18, whose hatred of fascism took him from the East End of London to the front line in Madrid. He survived being wounded and left in no man's land.
Sam Lesser died in October 2010.
