Synchronised swimming

Bill Oddie visits Woolston Eyes Nature reserve, by the M6. The lagoons here were created by sludge dredging for the Manchester Ship Canal. A very special little bird lives here - the black-necked grebe. It is a little, dumpy, fluffy thing with a black neck, rufous flanks, golden ear-tufts and scarlet eyes. A pair of grebes goes through their paces, each imitating the other's actions in a synchronised display. They dip, turn and dive together and race though the water. This place has a quarter to a third of the British breeding population.
