Purple beauty

Jersey is closer to France than to the UK, so many of its place names are French. Janet Sumner and Sue Daly go to Le Noir Pre – the black meadow - a wet meadow that's been saved by the National Trust for Jersey. They find many wild flowers including the Jersey orchid, which was named after the island, though they're actually a continental species. There are lots of other purple orchids here, such as the heath-spotted and southern marsh orchids, but the Jersey orchid is distinctive on closer inspection. It has well-spaced flowers, leading to its other name - the loose spaced orchid.
