For Assignment Lyse Doucet travels to Afghanistan to track down some the Soviet soldiers who remained behind after the Red Army left in 1989.
Twenty years ago this winter, the Soviet Red Army pulled its troops out of Afghanistan. A Cold War conflict against Western backed mujahadeen left Afghanistan in ruin and hastened the end of Soviet empire. Lyse Doucet was one of a few foreign journalists in Kabul during the final days of a decade long occupation. For Assignment she tracks down some Soviet soldiers who fought with the Red Army, and then deserted or were captured by the mujahadeen. They live in Afghanistan to this day and want to put their past behind them.
