Pregnant and Jailed in Post Office Scandal
A sub-postmistress who campaigns for justice after being wrongly jailed in the Post Office Horizon scandal tells her remarkable story.
On her very first day running her local Post Office, Seema discovered a cash shortfall at the till. She had to put in her own money to make the books add up. Every day, more and more money appeared to be missing. She didn't know it then, but she was the latest victim of the infamous Post Office Horizon accounting scandal, which saw hundreds of sub-postmasters and sub-postmistresses falsely convicted of theft, fraud and false accounting, based on faulty computer data.
Desperate to keep her business afloat, Seema even sold her gold wedding ring in an attempt to meet the shortfall. Following a trial, she was convicted and sent to prison whilst pregnant. Seema’s story puts a devastating human face on the Post Office scandal, one of the gravest miscarriages of justice in modern British history.
Bill Bailey pairs Seema with Jack, an artist of great emotional sensitivity, whose richly layered paintings explore, amongst other things, resilience. Will Jack's approach to Seema's portrait offer the perfect way to tell her story, full of friendships, family and strength?
