Melissa Aldana’s Flowers

The Chilean born saxophonist is celebrating some of the jazz artists that she admires.

‘Round Midnight is presented by award-winning saxophonist Soweto Kinch. This weekday late-night show celebrates the thriving UK jazz scene and spotlights the best new music alongside incredible acts from past decades.

This week, Soweto is joined by Chilean-born, New York-based tenor saxophonist Melissa Aldana. In 2013, she became the first female instrumentalist and South American musician to win the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition. She has continued to forge her path as a formidable saxophonist, working with artists including Danilo Pérez, Christian McBride, and Jeff “Tain” Watts, alongside her own work as a bandleader.

From Monday to Thursday this week, Melissa spotlights some of the musicians that have influenced her. Tonight, she begins with an American jazz pianist known for his soulful delivery and compositions.

Also in the programme, there is music from Ron Carter, Alice Leggett and Kassa Overall.
