Recluses
Do brilliant minds become even greater when one retreats from the world and does all their thinking in isolation? Naomi Alderman explores the brains of five reclusive thinkers.
Naomi Alderman returns with her series that explores the minds of the greatest thinkers in history. From political theorists to scientists to inventors, authors and artists. Our world is based on their ideas and innovations. How did they do their work, what did they struggle with, where did they find their dedication, creativity and inspiration?
These five thinkers were all shaped by either voluntarily or forcible retreating from society. They did their greatest pieces of work often in complete isolation. Naomi Alderman asks whether we need to shield ourselves from outside opinion in order to do our greatest thinking, or whether problems arise when we stop collaborating and consulting with others.
