Dave Okumu's 4/4
Soweto Kinch is joined by Mercury-nominated singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Dave Okumu.
‘Round Midnight is presented by award-winning saxophonist Soweto Kinch. This weekday late-night show celebrates the thriving UK jazz scene and spotlights the best new music, alongside incredible acts from past decades.
From Monday to Thursday this week, Soweto is joined by Mercury-nominated singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Dave Okumu. He is revered in the UK and internationally, known for thoughtful yet deeply virtuosic genre-transcending music. As well as being a celebrated bandleader, notably fronting the group The Invisible, Dave has worked with artists from across the musical spectrum, including Amy Winehouse, Tony Allen, Jack DeJohnette and Jessie Ware.
We caught up with Dave backstage at our 'Round Midnight showcase as part of November's London Jazz Festival, where he was performing with ESKA. He shared four of the albums that have deeply inspired him for our 4/4 feature. To kick off the week, Dave picked a release by three British jazz titans.
Also in the programme, there's music from Kelan Phil Cohran, Shake Stew and Ife Ogunjobi.
