Swan Lake Selections

The BBC National Orchestra of Wales and conductor Jaime Martín perform Greig, selections from Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, and Nielsen's Flute Concerto with soloist Elizaveta Ivanova.

The BBC National Orchestra of Wales are joined by their Principal Guest Conductor, Jaime Martín, to perform three charming, snow-dusted works. We begin in the Norwegian mountains, with the first suite that Edvard Grieg extracted from his incidental music to the play Peer Gynt. Although the suite opens with sunrise in the African desert, it finishes in the infamous Hall of the Mountain King under Norway's Dovrefjell. Carl Nielsen thought that the flute was an idyllic and pastoral instrument, and he wrote his Flute Concerto with that very much in mind, perfectly encapsulating Denmark's landscape. And finally, after the interval, we travel to snowy Moscow for Tchaikovsky's celebrated ballet, Swan Lake, and a concert suite created from Jaime Martín's own selection of movements from the ballet.

Recorded in Hoddinott Hall on 11th December, presented by Al Ryan.
