Charles Mackerras at 100

Janáček's Glagolitic Mass and Smetana's Má vlast conducted by Charles Mackerras in archive concert performances to celebrate the Australian conductor's centenary today.

Two great Czech works conducted by the Australian conductor Charles Mackerras, who was born 100 years ago today.

Charles Mackerras was a great champion of Czech music, having studied at the Prague Conservatoire in the 1940s. These archive performances are a fitting way to celebrate his centenary. The performance of Janáček's colossal Glagolitic Mass, a setting of Old Church Slavonic text and including an epic organ solo, is from the closing concert of the 2004 Janacek Festival in Brno. Mackerras conducted Smetana's rich and dramatic set of six symphonic poems depicting the composer's homeland, Má vlast, at the 1999 Prague Spring Festival.
