'Estimates Free? What’s that all about?'

Sean’s wondering: who would ever charge for estimates?

“I was behind a van at the traffic lights,” Sean says, “and you know you’re fed up sitting there, and I read this sign—Estimates Free! Why wouldn’t they be free? You go and say, ‘I want this painting job done. How much will it be?' And they say, 'oh, it’ll cost you six hundred. And by the way, the estimate is £35. What’s that all about?”

“It's just a gimmick, Shanny Boy,” say Bangor’s Posing Painters, “just to get work. Thirty-seven years in the business and never charged a penny! And we'd do it free for you! Just to be in the presence of a legend!”
