Underground Treasures
Bettany Hughes explores the stories locked within the Belogradchik rocks. She travels to the ancient Greek port of Sozopol where she uncovers extraordinary underwater remains.
Bettany Hughes continues her journey of discovery around Bulgaria's cultural wonders and this time she explores the stories locked within the Belogradchik rocks in north-western Bulgaria. The Magura cave, once home to bears and sabre-tooth tigers, has important traces of human habitation from the Palaeolithic to the Bronze Age: a series of narrow passages and cavernous halls painted with over a thousand prehistoric figures. Next, Bettany travels to the ancient Greek port of Sozopol once known as Apollonia Pontica, where she meets archaeologist Dr. Nayden Prahov and his team of divers as they uncover some of the site's extraordinary underwater remains.
