Patron of Schoolreaders Gyles Brandreth makes the Radio 4 Appeal on the charity's behalf. It runs a network of over two and a half thousand volunteers across England who visit schools, for an hour or two a week, to listen to children read.

Schoolreaders provides volunteers to primary schools to support children’s reading on a one-to-one basis. Reading is the key which opens the door to learning and life opportunities, and every child deserves the chance to learn to read well.

When Lucy was 6 she struggled with reading. Her Schoolreaders volunteer, Liz, helped her throughout primary school, listening to her read weekly. Lucy achieved top grades in English GCSE and attributes this to Liz’s support.

Improving Children’s Literacy

Improving Children’s Literacy
Every week, Schoolreaders volunteers support more than 26,000 children with a reading support session, across more than 1,300 primary schools. This improves their literacy, and their life-chances. Every child deserves the chance to learn to read.
