Four year old Amadou from Senegal has a joyful laugh and bright eyes. But due to rickets, his legs started to curve outwards, making every step painful. When Amadou came onboard a Mercy Ship, he could finally access the surgery he desperately needed.

Rachel Buckingham is an NHS children’s orthopaedic surgeon who volunteers with Mercy Ships. Operating onboard alongside volunteer staff from across the world, Rachel was able to straighten Amadou’s legs, so that he can run and play with his friends.

Change that lasts
As well as performing life-saving surgeries, Mercy Ships also trains local healthcare professionals. Courses cover a range of essential training, from anaesthesia to nursing skills and trauma care – creating change that will last for decades.
