Designing Drag in Aberdeen

Ryan Cowie draws on the sewing skills he picked up from his grandmother and his mum to create cutting-edge drag costumes.

Sewing runs in drag costume designer Ryan Cowie’s family. After a fitting with drag performer Demi Pointe at Ryan’s home studio in Aberdeen, the designer calls in on his nearby mum. The mother and son talk about the skills passed down through the generations, from grandmother, to mum, to Ryan. They also broach the difficult subject of when a then-teenage Ryan came out to his mum, her initial rejection of his sexuality, and the journey of acceptance she has come on since then.

Now dedicated drag fans, Ryan’s proud mum and dad accompany him to Dundee for the stage debut of his latest outfit for Demi Pointe on a drag club stage.
