Philip has been raised by his dear cousin Ambrose, who gets married in Italy to Rachel, the beautiful Countess Sangaletti.

But Ambrose writes letters home to Philip hinting that he is being poisoned.

So when Rachel comes to England, Philip is torn between love and suspicion.
