Edinburgh-born novelist Susan Edmonstone Ferrier [1782 – 1854] was noted for her sharp, witty accounts of Scottish life, reflecting views on the social mores of the time, and the relationship between the Scots and the English.

Her comedic first novel, ‘Marriage’, was written in 1810 and was much revised before publication in 1818.
