Exploring the Glenarm Castle Estate

Preserving ancient woodlands at Glenarm Castle Estate with The Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy and hearing about plans to share the MacDonnell family’s history with tourists.

Helen Mark and Willie Hill visit the Earl of Antrim’s estate in Glenarm to hear about plans for developing the woodland areas and the tourist attractions, with memories throughout the programme from local couple Frances and Jackie Wilson. Jackie was born on the estate in 1934, just months ahead of the 14th Earl of Antrim – Jackie’s friend “Lordy”.
In the company of Estate Manager Adrian Morrow, they meet Jim Marshall from the Northern Ireland Forest Service and hear how the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy will restore and preserve the ancient woodland for future generations.
Closer to the Castle, Adrian shows Helen and Willie round the old coach house – soon to be a museum telling the history of the carriages and vintage cars owned by the MacDonnells over the years.
Next stop is the Linen House – formerly the laundry but currently being transformed into a Heritage Centre to tell the story of the ancient Scottish family who for centuries have made Glenarm their home.
A visit to the gardens to meet Jordan McWhirter rounds up the visit.
