Episode One
Historian Bettany Hughes delves into the history of Gibraltar, beginning as far back as 100,000 years ago when it was settled by Neanderthals.
Historian Bettany Hughes delves into the history of this tiny British overseas territory, located at a strategic crossroads between Europe and North Africa, the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.
Less than seven square kilometres, the Rock of Gibraltar nevertheless boasts a staggering story: beginning as far back as 100,000 years ago when it was settled by Neanderthals. Today, Gibraltar is still brimming with Neanderthal wonders. Recently unearthed archaeological evidence of Neanderthal art and footprints is revolutionising our understanding of these prehistoric people.
Bettany also explores how other cultures have left their mark on Gibraltar, like the Moors, who flourished for seven centuries until 1468. Their wonders are the huge fortifications, baths and remnants of palaces that are still hidden all over the Rock.
